Searching for and Finding Files

From time to time you may want to restore only one file or several files from a backup. If the backup includes numerous files and directories it can be a chore to look up the files that you want to restore. InBack includes a Find File feature to help in this task. The Find File icon can only be found on the Backup Details tab. It is the icon with the magnifying glass next to the green check icon above the tabs.

Using the Find File Feature

To use the Find feature you must first choose a project on the Project tab, that you wish to search. When the Find File icon is selected the Find File InBackup Set window pops up.  There are three buttons and three important selection on this window.

A.The Find File InBackup Set window consists of three selections:

1.        Search For

2.        De-Select all non-matching files if previously selected

3.        Display Count Message when Find All is pressed

1.        Search For

In the Search For box type in the character search string that matches the file or files that you want to search for. Please note that wild card characters such as * or ? should not be used. The Search For string is not case sensitive but the search string must match exactly the character string in the filename. For example, if you want to find all files that have the character string of “Budget Analysis” in it’s filename you should type Budget Analysis or budget analysis to find your files. BudgetAnalysis would result in a File Not Found error message. Budget would find your files but would also find all files with the word budget in it.

2.        De-Select all non-matching files if previously selected

When this check box. is selected, which is the default, than any previous searched for files would be de-selected automatically when a new search is attempted. When this check box. is not selected than any previous searched for files would remain selected when the new search is attempted. The advantage to un checking this box would be to allow you to search for and highlight files of different search strings before restoring the files.

3.        Display Count Message when Find All is pressed

When this check box. is selected, which is the default, than a Search Result pop up window will be displayed showing the number of files that were found meeting the search criteria. When this check box. is not selected than no file count will be shown. The Search Result pop up window is only used with the Find All button.

B.The Find File InBackup Set window also has on it three buttons:

1.        Find

2.        Find All

3.        Cancel

1.        Find

When the Find button is selected a search is made from the current file selected to the end of the list. It will not search backwards to previous files so therefore you should always make sure that the first file in the list is highlighted before making a search. Remember that if you have unchecked the De-Select all non-matching files if previously selected check box. than the first file will also be highlighted after the search even if it does not meet the search criteria. The Find button will find the first file that matches the search criteria, to search for subsequent files click on the Find button again.

2.        Find All

When the Find All button is selected then only one search is required to find all of the files that meet the search criteria. Find All will highlight all the files that meet the search criteria. Find All always does a search from the beginning of the list by default.

3.        Cancel

When the Cancel button is selected the Find File feature is canceled.
